Getting Ready To Go Home

Image
We leave to come home in a couple days so I thought I would take a last opportunity to cover some of the miscellaneous things I have not yet posted. It is amazing how many nationalities we have encountered here--lots of people from Russia, French, of course, but you're not always sure if they are French or Canadian.  Above us are people from Argentina, Canadians are everywhere, Serbia, Lebanon, Italian, Asian, and more.  One of the nicest families we have met is from Romania.  We are now friends on Facebook-Adrian, Olivia, and Philip. Dominican Republic is a third world country, whatever that is, and more than anywhere else we have been, they have not been exposed to the concept of not littering.   Everywhere, on every street, there is plastic and styrofoam just thrown everywhere.  I know I am not supposed to use a word over and over but the only word that works is "everywhere".  The good thing is that among all of this trash there is still the beauty of fl

Macao Beach

Image
Today, our neighbors, who have a car, took us to a beautiful beach about a twenty minute drive from here called Macao Beach.  As we crested this hill in the road we got our first view of the bay. This beach is what I think of when someone says Dominican Republic.  The sand is soft but firm to walk on and the water is turquoise up close and deep blue in the distance.  On one end of the beach were cliffs while the other end went on forever.   The rode we came in on was a typical beach road of sand with deep ruts.  Along the road were these "huts" that were actually the beach restaurants.  We settled on the end of the beach by the cliffs--the waves were not so strong here--and it appeared this is where the fishermen came in with their catch of the day. Of course there were a few sales men.  This guy, as if you can't tell, was selling flip flops.   Close by was this "restaurant" that looked to be very popular.    We checked it out

ONNO's

Image
There is a beach front restaurant here called ONNOs.  They have lots of specials every day.      but one of the best days is Taco, Tequila Tuesday.  This is like we have in Bella Vista except you will notice they added "tequila".   In addition to their regular specials they have taco specials AND margarita specials.  Their margaritas are $99 pesos which is $2 US dollars.  They come in a variety of flavors but one of the best is the Passion Fruit margarita.  In addition, they have their tacos--the best one is the Diablo Shrimp for $89 pesos ($1.80). The atmosphere adds to the flavor since you are right on the sand. Gail and I shared a table that was right next to the outdoor shower and lots of local decoration.     There was a good crowd. And we even saw a cruise ship go by.   We plan on going back real soon.

The Gym

Image
Every morning I walk to the gym.  It is about an eight block walk and just gets me warmed up a little.  It is a pretty nice place--a little old but lots of good equipment   Inside the gym the equipment is divided into rooms.  There is one room that has all of the cardio equipment like bicycles, elipticals, and treadmills.  There is always loud music playing in this room with a beat that keeps you going. Another room has almost all of the free weights. The weight machines are located in a separate room and also spread throughout the whole place since there are so many of them.       They also have space for classes although they are all scheduled in the evenings.   It costs $40 a month to join but overall it is a pretty nice place.  I should come home in really great shape.

Boats On The Beach

Image
As I have mentioned before, we walk the beach every day.  One of the things I have noticed is the number and variety of boats that are moored close to the beach.  Many of these boats are obviously "party boats". One of these party boats is two stories high and is so big it can hold several hundred people.   There is a big boat that anchors by the dock that looks like a pirate ship.  We were told that when you go out on this boat the crew acts as if you are actually on a pirate ship and they put on a pretty good show.   All along the beach you can rent "skidoo" boats that look like they would be really fun because of the waves. You can also rent catamarans to go sailing.  There is always a great wind.  In fact, some days the wind is so strong that they won't let you take these out. But no matter how strong the wind, there always seems to be boats taking people parasailing.  One day we saw seven parasails up at the same time.   There
